0.37b10 [Yochizo]

TEST MODE:

- To enter test mode, press coin2 (key 6) and F3.

WIP:

- 0.133u1: Kanikani fixed service switch (was defined to port that does not exist) and DIP locations order in Argus.

- 0.127u4: Added 2nd YM2203 (1.5MHz) sound.

- 0.124u3: Aaron Giles merged memory maps for Argus drivers.

- 0.104u6: Andrew Gardner added preliminary support for the Jaleco color blending hardware found in Psychic 5, Argus and Valtric (some functionality is still unknown).

- 0.37b11: Changed Z80 CPU1/2 clock speeds to 5MHz. Added dipswitches 'Difficulty' and 2x 'Unused'.

- 18th December 2000: Yochizo fixed a small dipswitch problem in Argus.

- 0.37b10: Yochizo added 'Argus' ([NMK] (Jaleco license) 1986). Known issues: Mosaic effect in Valtric is not implemented. Half transparent color (50% alpha blending) is not emulated. I am not sure that Argus or Valtric use gray scale effect or not. In test mode, most roms have check sum error. Why ? dipswitches are not completed.

- 5th December 2000: Yochizo added proper support for Argus, so it is now playable.

- 24th November 2000: Yochizo sent in a driver for Argus and Valtric, but Argus is not working properly yet.

- 25th March 1998: CaBBe dumped Argus.

History

Arcade Video game published 33 years ago:

Argus (c) 1986 Jaleco.

While it borrows heavily from the game which established the vertically scrolling shooter, "Xevious", Argus adds its own unique twists. The player's ship is always presented in the center of the screen, and as the player moves left and right, the ground actually scrolls in the opposite direction. The player can continue scrolling all the way in one direction and end up back where he or she started.

Other new concepts include walls of mazes that float in the air which may be optionally traveled through. Certain ground targets provide power-ups or special weapons, but they must be bombed 3 times in order to earn them. A boss sequence occurs at the end of each stage. The boss has one infrequently exposed weak spot that only takes one bomb to destroy, but the boss will leave after an allotted time if the player does not succeed. There is a landing sequence after the boss fight that must be successfully maneuvered for bonus points. And finally, the ship receives a new weapons at each stage (5 distinct combinations which cycle).

The arcade game features 16 levels, the last four of which repeat indefinitely.
