SETUP:

- Press 'Insert' to speed up the slow IC test routine.

Bugs:

- Misaligned graphics on levels 3 & 4. zaxxon (ID 05782)

- Digitized speech is pitched too high. zaxxon (ID 05737)

WIP:

- 0.166: David Haywood fixed Choplifter crashed with a message in IC TEST. Palette ram writes were no longer actually being stored in RAM for games with the lookup PROM.

- 0.144u4: hap fixed Choplifter (8751 315-5151) scrolling problems.

- 0.131u2: The Decapping Project and Aaron Giles fixed Choplifter (8751 315-5151) - Game now playable.

- 0.131u1: Aaron Giles added and began hooking up the 8751's for the System 1 games. Still some work to do. Added I8751 (8MHz) CPU3 and 4k MCU rom (315-5151.ic74) to Choplifter.

- 6th May 2009: Guru - Chip 8751 found on Choplifter 315-5151 has just been decapped and dumped.

- 0.130u3: Aaron Giles added partial 8751 simulation for Choplifter. Renamed (chplft) to (choplift), (chplftb) to (chopliftu) and (chplftbl) to (chopliftbl).

- 0.127u3: Kevin Eshbach updated the Sega System 1 driver with more Choplifter bootleg board information and updated the placeholders for the PALs that need to be dumped.

- 0.125u7: Couriersud fixed Choplifter Player 2 video is upside down.

- 0.122u8: RansAckeR improved dipswitches according to manuals in Choplifter.

- 29th December 2007: Guru - Choplifter was useful for dumping the 315-5139 PLS153 PLD (DIP20). I also need to dump another chip on this board, named 315-5025 which I've located, but it's an 18-pin chip and I have no idea what to dump it as.

- 21st December 2007: Guru - A huge box arrived today. That 19.75kg box looks mighty impressive, although I'm not sure that all of it is going to be useful. Some could be alt. versions but most don't work so I'll need to dump all of these before I can tell exactly what they are. It contains Choplifter (Sega 1985, original unprotected version without 8751) and others. Thanks to Tingoes for sending these out.

- 0.121u2: Fixed rom names. Changed description to 'Choplifter (8751 315-5151)' and clone (alternate) to 'Choplifter (unprotected)'.

- 0.115u4: Replaced SN76496 sound with SN76489.

- 3rd June 2007: Mr. Do - Scanned instruction cards for Choplifter provided by Tormod.

- 0.106u12: MASH added plds ($0, 200 - pal16r4a.ic9 and pal16r4a.ic10) to Choplifter and pls ($400, 600 - pal16r4a-chopbl1.bin and pal16l8a-chopbl2.bin) to clone (bootleg).

- 25th January 2004: Stefan Jokisch fixed Choplifter.

- 0.37b6: Added proms ($300 - timing?). Changed palettesize from 2048 to 1536 colors.

- 0.34b3: Nicola Salmoria fixed fg/bg priority in Choplifter. Rewritten the SN76496 emulator. This fixes speech in Choplifter [Nicola Salmoria].

- 0.34b1: Added color proms ($0, 100, 200).

- 0.31: Jarek Parchanski added 'Choplifter' (Sega 1985) and clones (alternate) and (bootleg). Known issues: Choplifter doesn't work because the 8751 is not emulated. Due to a limitation of the current SN76496 emulator, speech is played badly and at a very low volume.

- 4th January 1998: Dumped Choplifter (8751 315-5151).

- TECHNICAL -

Game ID : 834-5795

Runs on the Sega "System 1" hardware.

Players: 2
Control: 8-way joystick
Buttons: 2

- TRIVIA -

Choplifter was released in October 1985 in Japan.

This game is a port from an original programmed by Dan Gorlin in 1982 for the Apple II. Choplifter was one of the few games to take the reverse route : first appearing on a home system and being ported to the arcade.

Charles Collins holds the official record for this game with 1,781,000 points on June 27, 1986.

- TIPS AND TRICKS -

* In the early stages, try to fly as low as possible - this way the fighters will not shoot you, and you are low enough to shoot the ground targets without being shot. Since this only works when you're in the air, and not when you're on the ground, it only works well on levels 1 and 3.

* To ensure that the tank won't arrive when you're picking up hostages, barely tap the joystick up between each hostage. This will cause the helicopter to lift off a little and reset the timer that causes the tanks to arrive.

* On level 2, you can land on the water under the boat when dropping off your men and they will climb up the side of the boat. This stops the planes from coming down and shooting you.
